No Candied Gospels For Those Who Wallow In Sin.

What can a mentalist learn from the strange and rather controversial art of speaking to the dead?

There is something extraordinary about watching an accomplished Medium work. Regardless of what one believes about the supernatural, watching somebody stand in front of a room full of strangers and begin offering impressions that somehow find their way into the most personal corners of people's lives can be fascinating.

For a mentalist, perhaps even a little frustrating.

Mentalists have spent generations inventing increasingly elaborate ways of discovering people's thoughts, names, memories and secrets. Yet a Medium can apparently offer a handful of seemingly unrelated impressions and gradually arrive at something so personal that the person receiving the reading is left wondering how on earth they could have known.

Naturally, the mentalist looks for a method. Pre-show work, impression devices, secret research, stooges, and all the other familiar tools of the trade.

But what if some of the most interesting techniques have nothing to do with any of those things?

No Candied Gospels is Lewis Le Val's exploration of precisely that question.

Drawing upon observations of mediumship demonstrations, this unconventional work examines the techniques, structures and subtleties that allow seemingly spontaneous impressions to develop into increasingly personal and specific revelations.

There are no spirits to summon here. No departed relatives, no messages from beyond, and no pretence of communicating with the dead.

Instead, these principles are reimagined for something altogether different: a deeply personal form of propless mentalism concerned not with the dead, but with the living.

Their experiences, circumstances, relationships, desires, uncertainties and the things that have shaped their lives.

Across 31 pages, No Candied Gospels presents a practical approach to intimate readings, with techniques for developing impressions, asking useful questions, finding direction when little is known, and gradually arriving at information that can feel entirely personal.

At the heart of the book is Contact Psychometry, a completely propless approach to giving personal readings, supported by several techniques and principles including Directionality, Zeroing In, Guess Who and Instant Intrigue. There are also ideas for incorporating existing knowledge of Tarot, numerology and other reading systems, along with plenty of practical examples and advice. None of this requires memorising scripts or learning complicated procedures. The aim is to understand a handful of ideas well enough that you can walk out of the house with absolutely nothing, approach somebody you've never met, and give a reading that might be received with the same astonishment as a convincing demonstration of mediumship, without ever claiming to communicate with the dead.

There are no stock lines here, nor will you find conventional cold reading dressed in supernatural language. The material explores a different way of approaching a reading, with techniques that can be incorporated into existing performances or developed into an experience of their own.

No props, no calculations, and nothing that needs to be committed to memory. The value lies in understanding the approach and learning to recognise the opportunities it creates.

Mediumship has long been a subject of fascination, scepticism and controversy. But whatever conclusions one draws about its more extraordinary claims, there may be considerably more for mentalists to learn from it than the usual explanations would suggest.

No Candied Gospels explores some of those neglected possibilities.
