The Gift Of The Darling Tongue by Lewis Le Val (PDF)

What if you could tell somebody exactly what their heart needed to hear, without knowing a single thing about them?

There is an old, rather charming idea that certain people possess a gift for speaking directly to the heart. Not necessarily knowing somebody's thoughts or uncovering their secrets, but somehow understanding something deeply personal about them, and finding the words they need to hear.

It's a lovely idea. And perhaps not quite as impossible as it sounds.

The Gift of the Darling Tongue is an unusual little piece of mentalism from Lewis Le Val, exploring how a few carefully chosen words can create an experience that feels remarkably intimate, even between two people who have only just met.

The participant is invited to privately revisit a meaningful part of their past. Nothing is written down, nothing is revealed, and the performer has no knowledge of the memory they've chosen.

Yet, after a moment of reflection, the performer leans in and whispers something that appears to speak directly to the heart of that experience.

The effect is deliberately understated. There are no dramatic revelations, no elaborate displays of psychic ability, and no need to manufacture an emotional response. The mystery lies in how somebody could apparently understand something so personal without ever being told what it was.

Across 14 pages, the complete experience is explained, including the presentation, the thinking behind its construction, practical advice on handling such personal material, and an optional variation incorporating a peek device for those who prefer a more conventional moment of mind reading.

The original handling is entirely propless, requires no complicated procedures, and can be performed almost anywhere, provided the moment and the participant are right.

This won't be a piece for every audience, nor is it intended to replace the more traditional material in a mentalist's repertoire. But for performers interested in the subtler, more human side of the art, it offers something rather different.

Sometimes the most extraordinary thing you can give somebody isn't an impossible revelation, it’s a few words they weren't expecting to hear.
